Ray's Philosophy
Often when asked where should I invest my money in the IT industries? Ray's answer remains the same. "In yourself," there is no greater way to invest than in your own knowledge and skills. Kazien (continous imrpovement) remains his go to answer in life. Ray believes everyone should be focusing on quality and building their own skills is more important than building a product.
Focus on things you know:
Over 10 years ago Ray worked with global WMS partners as a technology consultant. He has turned ideas into reality by managing innovative solutions in Omni-channel fulfillment. By today's standard most of Ray's development projects could be classified as artificial Intelligence solutions (AI).
Optimization:
Dating back to the late 90's Ray began overseeing development projects to reduce miss-picks occurring in warehouses by implementing headsets with integrated scanners. the headsets. The headsets allowed Voice to text solutions and assisted workers navigating the warehouse. The software would share the shortest rots to stoage bins and pallets. The headsets would allow the user to confirm they picked the right product by scanning UPC's (barcodes), in order to complete the a cycle known as pick, pack, and ship. By designing the headset to be user friendly and wireless workers able to reduce their time walking by up to 60%. This allowed for more packages to be pick packed ans shippped daily, Today most machine learning models mimic the patterns created 20 years ago. In fact more AI programs still use similar models in regards to text to speech. This is just a sample from the hundreds of optimization and change management solution implemented in Ray's career.
Opportunities:
In 1999, just months after graduating from college Ray landed a programming management role overseeing multiple project intiatives. Fueled by his entreprenueral spirit Ray quickly began his own company in order to provide C2C contracting opportunities from his new connections in the IT industry. Ray quickly landed IT based contracts setting up retail stores, grocery solutions, and software development projects. Ray then found himself and his new team in a unique environment focused on machine learning and voice recognition (speech to text and text to speech). Ray found his team writing voice recognition software and continued to grow his new raltionship with Dragon Naturally speaking by deploying seasonal kiosks solutions to malls accross the East coast. Although Ray had mixed emotions on the kiosks, he quickly founds that the brand image was growing and that the new software was able to collect multiple accents from demosntration occuring in the kiosks by workers. Although the sales were slow the data collected from the demonstration and brand recognition was a huge success. Ray had gained first hand experience managing AI voice to text project development and had started his own company...
A Major set back to the AI revolution: 18 years of deep sleep!
Shortly after the rapid growth of his own startup his primary client Dragon Naturally Speaking announced they had partnered with Goldman Sachs to negotiate the sale of their company to a European competitor (Leanout and Hasupie) for $580 million in stock. L&H later was found guilty of accounting fraud and its stock prices took a sharp decline before a total collapse. From 2000 to 2013 law suites continued as the Bakers attempted to recover their digital assets and IP. Over the next several years Dragon naturally speaking was sold to Nuance Communications, and then to Microsoft. During this time the products development was minimalized due to the ongoing court battles. During this time Ray's contracts came to an end, and he began taking on new contracts to fund his own software products. With Dragon changing hands to Microsoft and Nuance its development seemed to stall and it wasn't until 10 years later the AI industry that GPU's grew large enough to remove the limitation of the original product. From 2000 to 2018 voice to text and early AI sat waiting for hardware capable of expanding their solution to a global market. Nvidea had finally came to the rescue for AI and the original theory of using GPU's versus CPU's came to life.
While Voice to Text Slept Ray A new Venture Began:
With Voice to text frozen in time Ray took his knwoledge of BBS solutions, internet users, and leveraged his family's business to release their own Ecommerce platform. Built in house Ray developed the first prototypes before bringing in multiple developers to maintain the platform. For several years Ray worked onboarging large clients onto the Ecommerce platform, setting up web servers, and finished the development of a new security solution called AdwareSpyware SE by Desktop Softwares. While developing the Antivirus/Anti-Spyware solution Ray spent a lot of time devloping his pattern recognition sklls, completed a 6 month formal project management training and enhanced his machine learning skills, which he later applied to multiple applications.
A Major Debut:
Shortly after some quality testing and a short pilot Ray released AdwareSpyware SE and launched himself immediately to the top of the industry. Ray quickly gained 5 star rating from CNET, Yahoo, TuCows, and more. After launching the product grew from a small beta and quickly recieved over 1.5 million installations from Cnet partners, and hundred of thousand more. Quickly recognized for its heuristic scanners (machine learning algorythms) created within the product we had introduced a new way to practively detect virus and prevent anti-spyware. Now with two new products (Ecommerce platform) and a growing AV product we quickly realized we were not prepared for the growth and were forced to sell the product. In hindsight, if I knew more about investing at 22 I would have brought in investors but instead sold the product in order to gain a huge payday for myself and family. After reviewing a few offers we ended up selling the product to a shell company owned by GIANT Spyware (AKA Microsoft). Less than a year later a repackaged version of Giant Antispyware was formally released as Microsoft Antispyware. Shorlty after the release Microsoft began giving asway the solution free of charge to users with Valid windows licenses. The second release was later converted to visual basic (which our program was primarily written in) and rebranded Windows Defender.
A Small Step back in time:
While a sophomore in highschool, 1992 Ray had already Pascal training, Cobol, and had successfully launched his own BBS solution to play games with his friends. Primarily running on dialup switchboards Ray was intigued by AOLs recent entry into the market and began learning about internet connectivity. After some research Ray found a CLEC caapable of supporting dialup locations scattered accross Cape Cod and New England. Rays family, primarily operated hotels and was focused on the hospitality industry found the internet inspiring as well, and before he knew it helped launched his family into the ISP, and IT support industry. During Ray's senior year in high school began assisting hotels with setting up internet so hotels could begin selling via websites his company was hosting. This began Ray's introduction into the payment industry and shopping carts. In 1992 Ray met with Hotels.com executives and was offered consultanting role configuring clients PCs with a custom DOS scripts capable of supporting file transfers and writing reservations into local databases. In 1995 Ray was first introduced to IOT devices while working with the IRL and Nascar to improve timing and scoring solutions. From 94-96 Ray worked P/T as a paid intern configuring NH Motor Speedways Timing, scoring, and live data feeds. Due to his technical skills the IRL requested he manage the pilot of a real-time transponders mounted to the base of racecars. This removed the need for paid score keepers manually recording lap times with a clicker. Due to his experience with Nascar's timing and scoring he served as the Director of Media and VIP solutions.
Pattern and object recognition:
Early in his career Ray was extremely focused on machine learning, pattern recognition, and created his own software solutions.
Ray began his career in 1998 in project maangement by overseeing the development of text to speech and voice to text solutions for business users. He additionally took on projects deploying point of sales, payment card services, and built his own anti-virus solution with the help of two fulltime programmers. Shortly after the launch his product quickly became one of the most popular solution on the market and was downloaded to over 1.5 million users in the US. It remained one of the top 5 products in the industry until he sold the product to an entity owned by Giant Antispyware.
Shortly after selling Ray decided to start focusing on retail and warehouse management in order to utilize his recent degree in business management, but little did he know after a couple of years he had gained firsthand knowledge of retail systems and payment processing solutions would lead him to become a project manager. Although highly interested in building new technology Ray realized working as a project manager, he could teach others how to apply operational efficiencies and began consulting as a global project manager for software development companies and retail manufacturers in need of innovative solutions.
Now highly focused in change management Ray often gets to manage innovative projects while teaching others machine learning, and artificial intelligence which he focused on early in his career in large team environments.
Ray enjoys working as a PM, discussing technology, 3d printing, and renewable energy. and enjoys sharing his knowledge of how things are made. Ray currently works as a project portfolio manager and consultant. While not working Ray can be found keeping up his development skills by enrolling in training and writing new software solutions.
Currently his passion lies in building new relationships, molding young business analysis to become project managers, and developing new opportunities.
20 years ago robotics began evolving due to improved machine learning and probability software improvements. Do to improved software and models programs that took 12-24 months to build can be created overnight, lowering the cost to enter the robotic industry. 20 years ago robotics began evolving due to improved machine learning and probability software improvements. With new technology comes new opportunities. Picture the cost of training a mass labor force, recruiting, build a product such as a car, and having to deliver it to your driveway. Due to rapid changes and 3d printing capabilities new Micro factories are changing our supply chain as we know it, and with that change comes the need for Omni fulfillment solutions. Smaller product can be created in bulk and delivered to your local retail store or right to your doorstep. There were the challenges WMS systems were built for, and with improved integration to high tech devices operational efficiency is helping lower operation costs, and reducing labor shortages in high demand markets.
